Room 14 Week 1 Day 5 21 April 2020

Abbey had an interesting dinner talk on the question “Can kindness change the world?”
She thinks No, because someone might make the world mean. I can be kind to a person but that is only one person.
She also read two books on Storyline Online and wrote about the following picture “The Writer.”

Chapter three .. To be continued

Sonia-Jae has been busy with planting, singing, drawing, and reading! Here is a delightful video of her reading Little Bear to us. Enjoy!

Olivia made feijoa jam and wrote a lovely letter to her teacher about it! Thanks, Olivia, we can't wait to see you too! Was great to have a Zoom visit.

Max wrote a character story about Benji using the 5 ws. Here is exactly how he wrote it.

Character story
Who – Benji
What – He is a dog
When – In the summer
Where – In a city
Why – To find a family
How – He walked
What problem – A bad guy kidnapped the children from his new family and his mum was sad.
What did he do – He went to get his friend, that he made, which was a bloodhound, there was a dog that was guarding the kids so they couldn’t go anywhere.  The bloundhound came and pushed him to the floor, then pushed him into a pond.  The mum was sad so she called a detective police.  They found the bad guys and took them into the detectives car.  They took the watch from the bad guy and gave it back to the kids.
I'm glad to know the kids were okay in the end, Max! Thanks for sharing your story with us!

Rory drew a map of his room and included himself in the picture!

Sophie has been learning outdoor survival skills today ❤️ She and her family watched a video showing how to design them and learned about hypothermia. You look very prepared, Sophie!

You can learn how to make a bivvie by watching this video. Thanks for sharing your learning, Sophie!

Tobin has had a fun day! This morning he chose to do some weaving.  We had discovered a flax bush at the back of our garden this morning, remembering the weaving we did at Mangere Mountain Tobin wanted to use flax.

"Remember we have to say something to thank the flax plant for its leaves Mum". So the two of us, plus Tobin's curious older sister Niamh, recited the school Karakia to the flax plant.  Tobin then reminded us about the baby leaves, the parent leaves and the grandparent leaves - these were the ones we were to cut and use for our Harakeke.

A quick google and Tobin chose to make a harakeke fantail, which he went on to decorate (pic attached).  After lunch we were outside and Tobin's dad played some fantail sounds on his phone.  A very curious fantail came to visit us - he even landed on the sun umbrella above us and then hung upside down off the edge - he was very curious where the sound was coming from! (video attached).

Max made Anzac biscuits and wrote us a history lesson about it! Thanks, Max!

Anzac biscuits

Anzac biscuits are made using rolled oats. They were made during world war 1. Australia and New Zealand worked together to make anzac biscuits. The anzac biscuits were made by the wives of soldiers, because they don’t spoil easily so they would last.
